CULTURE NEWS

  • More than 25 events are scheduled in Akron from this week into April, featuring weekly music jam sessions at Musica (every Wednesday until March 25), art exhibits at the Akron Art Museum, live theater shows at local playhouses, and a downtown Sakura Festival on April 4.  Signal Akron

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Garfield Community Learning Center on Monday, Jan. 5, Karmaya Kelly was sworn in as a new Akron Board of Education member — celebrating her 39th birthday with encouraging applause. The board shift is expected to boost accountability and bring fresh community perspectives.  Signal Akron
  • Kent State University has partnered with Green Flower to launch six new online Cannabis Career Certificate programs that address staffing shortages in Ohio's growing marijuana industry. FINANCE NEWS

  • A Powerball ticket purchased at Fairlawn Foodmart on West Market Street won $100,000 by matching four white balls and the red Powerball from the December 27 drawing; the ticket used a two-X Powerplay multiplier.  iHeartMedia

SPORTS NEWS

  • After 12 seasons with the Browns, guard Joel Bitonio became teary-eyed during a locker cleanout on Jan. 5 at headquarters and said he will take a few weeks to recover before deciding if he will retire, citing recent coaching changes as a key factor.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Jim Dennison, the winningest football coach in Akron and Walsh history, died at 87, leaving a lasting legacy from 13 seasons with the Zips and 18 leading the Walsh football program. He set records and inspired future coaches in local sports.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Andre Szmyt kicked a 49-yard game-winning field goal on Jan. 4 in Cincinnati, giving the Browns a 20-18 win after a missed kick in Week 1. His clutch performance capped a season marked by personal loss + intense pressure.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Legendary football coach and athletic director Jim Dennison passed away at 87 on Sunday at University Hospitals Portage Medical Center in Ravenna. He led Akron to its Division II national championship game in 1976 and established Walsh's football program, leaving a lasting mark on local sports.  WKYC
