BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Coffee Pot Restaurant — believed to be Summit County's oldest restaurant — will go up for auction on Jan. 8 in Barberton under owners Menda and Ken Ramsey.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • The Coffee Pot (Summit County's oldest restaurant) closed on Christmas Eve and will be auctioned soon with its famous coffee pot facade included.  Akron Beacon Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Ohio's U-Haul Growth Index fell 29 spots to No. 43 in 2025 as one-way customer departures made up 50.3% of trips; some Central Ohio suburbs still showed growth.  Akron Beacon Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The local school board voted (Jan. 6) to reinstate the suspended superintendent, paving the way for new leadership in the district. The decision followed a detailed review and is expected to restore stability in the schools.  Cleveland 19 News
  • New Akron school board members Nathan Jarosz, Karmaya Kelly and Phil Montgomery took the oath at Garfield Community Learning Center (Garfield CLC) on Jan. 5 along with returning member Gregory Harrison. Family and community members attended the ceremony.  Akron Beacon Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A minor earthquake was detected in Northeast Ohio on Tuesday, Jan. 6, and seismologists confirmed the low-magnitude tremor (no damage was reported) as they continue to monitor for aftershocks.  Cleveland 19 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Akron is launching Civic Assembly to let 65 randomly selected residents propose housing solutions. The volunteer group will meet weekly from March 14 to May 14 and receive support ($1,000 stipend, transportation, and childcare) while planning a public presentation in summer.  Akron Beacon Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Summit County reported a steep rise in flu cases and hospitalizations, with new data showing numbers well above past years. Local health officials (including experts from Akron Children’s Hospital) said an H3N2 variant is largely to blame and urged residents to get their annual flu vaccine.  Akron Beacon Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • In the 2025 season, Greater Akron girls volleyball teams showcased standout stars as Wadsworth, Hoban, and others advanced to state and regional tournaments, earning top honors and committing to college programs. Leaders such as Rowan Kelly, Lauren Decker, and the Mintz twins drove these local successes.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • On Tuesday, Jan. 6, Akron hosted Central Michigan at Rhodes Arena in its third MAC game; the Zips entered with a 10-4 record and Tavari Johnson averaged 20.6 points & Central Michigan held a 4-11 mark.  Akron Beacon Journal
