  • The Sons and Daughters of Italy Akron Lodge 685 held its annual Christmas Party in December at St. George Fellowship Center — donating $1,500 each to Rolling Thunder of Akron, Labor Outreach Ministry, and Summit County Continuum of Care.  Akron.com

  • Steve Dimengo, managing partner at Buckingham, Doolittle and Burroughs, said the firm will move from Fairlawn back to downtown Akron to strengthen its local presence — more details of the plan will be shared soon.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • After more than a century in service, the 102-year-old Coffee Pot closed its doors on Christmas Eve and was toured by locals on Jan. 8 (starting at 3 p.m.) before a live auction began at 4:30 p.m.; owners Menda and Ken Ramsey retired after keeping the business going since 2001.  News 5 Cleveland

  • Magical Theatre Company invites audiences to experience Agatha Christie’s ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ with performances from Jan. 30 to Feb. 7 at 565 W. Tuscarawas Ave in Barberton. The production features actors from Northeast Ohio and promises a classic mystery journey.  Akron.com
  • The Akron/Summit Convention and Visitors Bureau launched the 10th annual Summit Brew Path on Jan. 3 to mark a decade of craft beer with 18 breweries and cash prizes. Participants aged 21+ can collect stamps online or at breweries and join the Brew Path Bash with games, tastings, and food.  Akron.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students returned to school yesterday after an inspection resolved asbestos concerns in the building; officials confirmed safety measures remain in place + school administrators will continue to monitor the situation to keep students secure.  Cleveland 19 News
  • The University of Akron will host its first Rubber City Rumble on Jan. 10 at the Jean Hower Taber Student Union at 303 Carroll St. Over 70 middle and high school robotics teams will compete in a VEX Robotics Competition organized by student-led Akron Roobotics to spark interest in engineering.  Akron Beacon Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials showed the Ohio EPA that Akron meets water quality standards by converting the Cuyahoga Street Storage Facility (saving ratepayers an estimated $230 million relative to the $265 million EHRT facility) while the EPA issued a draft permit modification on Dec. 26 for public comment.  Akron.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • An Akron Children’s doctor explained that the CDC’s new policy for childhood vaccines, announced Jan. 5, now recommends 11 instead of 17, and urged parents to discuss any changes with their pediatricians during well-child visits — ensuring kids stay protected.  Akron Beacon Journal
