BUSINESS NEWS

  • Some private snow removal companies in Northeast Ohio are facing a salt shortage as winter deepens, forcing them to ration supplies for both commercial and residential clients today. The shortage is expected to ease once mine production increases and weather conditions improve.  News 5 Cleveland

CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities in Akron warned pet owners that leaving pets outside during extreme winter weather may result in criminal charges — local police advise keeping animals inside to protect their wellbeing.  News 5 Cleveland

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Weather Service warns of dangerously cold wind chills and snow for Greater Akron from this weekend into next week. City officials extended warming center hours at Summit Lake Community Center (380 W. Crosier St.) and an Emergency Overnight center to help residents cope.  Akron Beacon Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A water main break on Cormany Road at Robinson Avenue in Portage Lakes affected 325 customers yesterday, leading Akron to issue a boil alert on several streets. City crews restored flow but advise boiling water for two minutes before using it for drinking or cooking.  Akron Beacon Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Flu hospitalizations in Ohio dropped slightly by Jan. 10, but flu activity remains high due to a super flu strain; health officials urge residents to get vaccinated and maintain good hygiene (ODH guidelines).  Akron Beacon Journal
  • A study by the Health Policy Institute of Ohio (HPI) finds that 75 of 88 counties lack enough mental health services, resulting in long wait lists and few specialists for families and local providers.  WKYC

SPORTS NEWS

  • Barberton Board of Education approved the hiring of former Buchtel standout Pyrce Taylor as the new head football coach during a Jan. 14 meeting. Taylor (previously offensive coordinator at Youngstown Chaney) will lead the Magics football team.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • On Jan. 16, The Akron Beacon Journal ranked top high school girls basketball players from Greater Akron as the season reaches its midway point. Players like Evelyn McKnight (Copley) and Melania Cornute (St. Vincent-St. Mary) each average around 23 points per game.  Akron Beacon Journal
