ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • University of Akron’s Physical Facilities Operations Center on Hill Street caught fire Friday, Jan. 23, leading to a safe evacuation while Akron Fire Department responded to extinguish the flames; officials said a crane had been removing a cooling tower when they advised the public to avoid the area until further notice.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Akron senior business consultant Skyler Parks advises local solopreneurs to grow their businesses in 2026 by refining plans, researching market needs, saving with tools like the Solo 401(k) from JPMorganChase + boosting strategic marketing.   • Clorox announced it will purchase Akron’s GOJO Industries for $2.25 billion to expand its skin health & hygiene reach with the Purell brand. The acquisition is set to finalize before Clorox’s Fiscal Year 2026 pending regulatory approval.  Cleveland.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Carousel, a romantic comedy filmed partly in Medina, Cleveland and near Akron-Canton Airport, opened at Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 22 and received mixed reviews from critics. The movie took advantage of the Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit to shoot in the area.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • On Jan. 23, the Main Thing Skills Summit offered Akron job seekers hands-on career guidance, panels from top companies and networking opportunities at House Three Thirty on 532 W. Market St, ending with an R&B sing-along after-party sponsored by the LeBron James Family Foundation.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Woodridge School Board member Scott Karlo will resign on Feb. 13 to pursue public education advocacy; the district is now accepting applications from local residents for the open seat with submissions due by Feb. 10 (applications may be mailed or dropped off at the Administrative Center on Quick Road).  Akron Beacon Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch for Ohio, forecasting heavy snow of up to 8 inches from Jan. 25–26 and frigid temperatures that may bring hazardous travel conditions (including black ice) on roads. Residents should prepare for potential power outages and travel delays.  Akron Beacon Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Some Northeast Ohio communities face a salt shortage from delayed Cargill shipments as a heavy storm approaches while officials in Akron, Kent, and Hudson report stable supplies and plan to ration salt on key roads — crews in other areas may skip salting on minor streets.  Akron Beacon Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Akron Children's hospital is using a new drug—iloprost—for frostbite treatment as cold weather causes rapid skin damage. Nurse practitioner Stephanie Steiner said the IV therapy (given over six hours on five days) has been used on about 10 patients to help save affected tissue.  News 5 Cleveland

  • Retired Akron Public Schools baseball coach John Sarver was inducted into the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Jan. 23 in Columbus. He is honored for his 43-season career at schools including Ellet and Hoban (record: 627 wins, 392 losses).  Akron Beacon Journal
  • The Akron Beacon Journal released its rankings for top Greater Akron high school girls basketball teams in the 2025-26 season as the regular season nears its end.
