  • Keith Redmon, longtime funeral director at Redmon Funeral Home, announced his retirement after more than 40-year service. He and his wife plan to focus on family and community work after the sale of their business to Rollings Funeral Service, with changes taking effect later this year.  Akron Beacon Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Wayside Furniture’s Wine, Cheese, and Chocolate, Darling event is set for Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. at Akron Civic Theatre; it will showcase 60 wines paired with cheeses + chocolates from local purveyors, and tickets cost $93 for patrons 21 and older.  Akron Beacon Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After a quiet Saturday, heavy snow is falling today in Akron with up to a foot of accumulation expected across the region. Several churches have canceled services and Boston Mill Visitor Center is closed—officials warn that hazardous roads and a salt shortage are driving the precautions.  Akron Beacon Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Ohio Department of Taxation released revenue figures from adult-use marijuana sales between August 2024 and November 2025, showing Seville earned nearly $210,000 while Kent netted over $173,000; corrections will be completed in early February (according to a department spokeswoman).  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Crews repaired a burst water main that closed West Market Street from Westgate Circle to Manor Road after it broke on Jan. 21 in Wallhaven. City officials said cold weather may have stressed the pipe, and the street reopened on Jan. 24.  Akron Beacon Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Akron Children's Hospital's burn center is now using a new drug called Aurlumyn (iloprost) to treat frostbite as dangerous wind chills drop temperatures below zero; the treatment must be given within 72 hours of warming to help save tissue that might otherwise be lost to amputation.  WKYC

SPORTS NEWS

  • After a 123–118 win over the Kings on Friday, Jan. 23, Evan Mobley delivered his best display this season for the Cavaliers with 29 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 blocks (a performance that earned a Shaq comparison from coach Kenny Atkinson).  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Highland's wrestler Niko Giatis placed second at the Grizzly Invitational (a key step forward) and is preparing for the state tournament to build on his performance.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • The Akron Zips defeated Ohio University 86-65 on Jan. 24 at the Convocation Center, with Tavari Johnson scoring 24 points, Shammah Scott going perfect from the line, and Amani Lyles earning his fifth double-double — the team will host Toledo on Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. at Rhodes Arena.  Akron Beacon Journal
