BUSINESS NEWS

  • Magic City Brewing Company in Akron announced Tuesday it will close on Valentine’s Day and will remain open until then — the Rabbit Hole is closed as of today.  Cleveland 19 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ohio Senate Bill 19 passed the Senate in November — it bars teachers who fail a math benchmark from leading math classes pending a House vote. The bill requires education departments to set clear math proficiency standards for new teaching credentials and aims to boost quality instruction.  Akron Beacon Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Ohio Department of Agriculture expanded its quarantine to include northern counties (including Cuyahoga and Lake) to curb the spread of the invasive box tree moth that threatens local boxwood plants. The new measure restricts the movement of boxwood material to protect the horticulture industry.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Marsha Andrus, a 20-year resident of Spring Hill Apartments, spoke at city council Monday night to voice concerns about roaches and bedbugs.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • The Akron-Summit County Public Library named Michelle Alleman as its new executive director on Feb. 3, 2026. Alleman, who served as deputy and interim director (following Pamela Hickson-Stevenson’s retirement), brings 27 years of library experience to lead modern service initiatives.  Akron Beacon Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Grassroots Architecture, an Akron firm, was selected to design Made in Akron pre-reviewed home plans to help builders save up to eight months and $8,000. The completed designs by the end of April aim to boost affordable housing and revitalize neighborhoods.  Signal Akron

  • According to ESPN, the Cavaliers traded guard Darius Garland and a 2026 second-round pick for former MVP James Harden + team officials have yet to confirm the deal, a move expected to boost their win-now push.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Former Hoban star Lamar Sperling signed with UTEP via the NCAA transfer portal on Feb. 3 & played three seasons with Buffalo after setting high school records.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • On Feb. 2, Akron-area high school girls basketball saw Streetsboro tie Norton 42-41 as Ava Bodavetz and Carlee Bedford led a late push; Norton will play at Coventry on Feb. 4.  Akron Beacon Journal
