- ➤ Clorox announced plans to acquire GOJO Industries, based in Akron, for $2.25 billion on Thursday, Jan. 22. Clorox CEO Linda Rendle praised the company's strong management and innovation, saying the deal will boost Purell growth and is expected to close this summer. Signal Akron
- ➤ On Feb. 4, Catalyst Brands is expected to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and shutter about 180 Eddie Bauer stores across North America, affecting eight Ohio locations where four remain open (including the Summit Mall location in Akron). The filing will not impact its manufacturing, wholesale or online services. Akron Beacon Journal
- ➤ Bricks & Minifigs, a new Lego resale store, opened Wednesday, Feb. 4 near Sam's Club in Fairlawn. The store sells new and used Lego sets, offers kits of local landmarks, and hosts community events for builders of all ages. Akron Beacon Journal
- ➤ Magic City Brewing Co., a heavy-metal-themed taproom on Manchester Road in Akron, announced that it will close on Feb. 14 while its Rabbit Hole location in Merriman Valley is already closed. It remains open until then with its standard hours. Akron Beacon Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Yesterday, the old Cuyahoga Falls High School closed after a boiler failure caused pipes to burst and flooding damaged halls; the school board moved events and relocated students to new facilities. Officials worry further leaks may occur (given the building’s fragile 1920s pipes). Akron Beacon Journal
REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ Late Feb. 3, a fire caused the demolition of the condemned Parkside Apartments in South Akron (the building had been vacant for months). Akron Beacon Journal
- ➤ Kenmore Historical Society is set to purchase the 1896 Lawndale Schoolhouse (abandoned for over 10 years) at 1208 W. Wilbeth Road in Kenmore as it works with Summit County Land Bank. A committee formed in July will fundraise and hire an architect to restore the building by end of February. Signal Akron

- ➤ The Cavaliers traded guard Lonzo Ball and two second-round picks to the Utah Jazz Wednesday to lower cap space — a move following their blockbuster Darius Garland deal with the Clippers. Akron Beacon Journal
- ➤ On Tuesday, Bowen Hardman hit a game-winning 3-pointer with 8 seconds left to lead Akron men's basketball to a 66-64 MAC win against Eastern Michigan; Tavari Johnson assisted on the clutch play as four players scored in double figures. The Zips will play Troy on Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. Akron Beacon Journal
- ➤ St. Vincent-St. Mary graduate Malaki Branham was traded from the Wizards to the Dallas Mavericks as part of a blockbuster NBA deal that sent Anthony Davis to Washington. The 22-year-old guard averaged 4.6 points for the Wizards this season. Akron Beacon Journal
- ➤ On Feb. 4, 2026, five Akron-area high school football players signed letters of intent with NCAA Division I colleges, raising the local scholarship count to 23. They chose schools including UConn, Penn, Colgate, Morehead State & Kent State. Akron Beacon Journal
