COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mail service at Spring Hill Apartments is restored after a cockroach infestation led the USPS to suspend deliveries, and city officials+tenant advocates met with management to address building concerns and improve resident communication.   • In Cleveland, recreation centers are opening as warming sites Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. In Akron, Summit Lake Community Center extends hours Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and the Emergency Overnight Center runs from Friday to Monday, 7 p.m. to 8 a.m.  WKYC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cavaliers radio announcer Rafael Hernández-Brito tutors ESL students at Jennings Community Learning Center ahead of their OELPA exam on Feb. 9; his support has raised passing rates from 20% to 53%+ and he aims for complete success as he plans to expand tutoring through local schools.  Akron Beacon Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Snow blankets Northeast Ohio, causing icy roads, school delays, and cautious travel in Akron as plowing crews work regionwide. The National Weather Service in Cleveland issues Winter Weather and Cold Weather Advisories with dangerous conditions later today — residents are urged to plan extra travel time.  WKYC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rebecca Cool was named CEO of Summit County's Victim Assistance Program on Feb. 6 + she plans to strengthen community partnerships, hire staff, secure funding, and enhance support for victims of critical incidents.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Eligible Ohio taxpayers can receive free tax-filing assistance from AARP Foundation Tax-Aide at 224 local sites until April 15 (bring necessary documents to meet eligibility) as IRS-certified volunteers help secure refunds and credits for those with low and moderate incomes.  Akron Beacon Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Officials say construction of the local stadium will start early March (despite legal challenges) and delays are not expected. Further details will emerge as the project moves forward.  Cleveland 19 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Sports betting in Ohio brought in a record $1 billion in revenue last year after over $10 billion in wagers, with about 6,064 in-app bets tracked during Browns games. Governor DeWine said he regrets the law that allowed sports betting and experts say expansion is unlikely until his term ends.  News 5 Cleveland
  • After the opening ceremony on Feb. 6, Ohio athletes are competing in ice hockey and freestyle skiing at the Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina, Italy. Several natives, including Laila Edwards (from Cleveland Heights) and J.T. Miller, represent Team USA as the games continue.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Kyra Dossa, a former Walsh Jesuit student from Greater Akron, will represent Team USA in freestyle aerial skiing at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina, Italy. Her first qualifying run is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 4:45 a.m. ET.  Akron Beacon Journal
