COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rubber City Rescue moved into a vacant three-story building at 300 Kenmore Blvd, using two floors to care for up to 40 dogs and ease pressure from a full county shelter. The nonprofit rescues stray dogs and depends on volunteers + donations for daily care.  Signal Akron
  • Greater Akron nonprofits will host charity events in the coming weeks (pet rescue gala on Feb. 14 at St. George Fellowship Centre, breakfast-themed fundraiser on Feb. 19 at Our Lady of the Cedars, polar bear jump on Feb. 28 at Portage Lakes State Park Beach).  Akron Beacon Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Akron residents should not put old electronics in their blue cart but instead drop them off at designated locations (such as the Akron Zoo’s Party for the Planet event in April, local retail centers, and recycling programs) to prevent toxic leaks from e-waste. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents at Spring Hill Apartments have suffered unlivable conditions with persistent mold and pest issues (one tenant’s young child faces respiratory challenges), and Akron officials inspected the building on Feb. 8 and issued a remediation order to ensure safer living conditions.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Cavs star Donovan Mitchell will detour to attend Super Bowl 60 in Santa Clara where fiancé Coco Jones will sing Lift Every Voice and Sing after his Feb. 7 Sacramento game and before his Monday matchup with the Nuggets.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Akron-born Patriots coach Mike Vrabel, a Walsh Jesuit alumnus, led his team to a Super Bowl on Sunday and accepted a challenge from former coach Gerry Rardin to return for another big game, with Rardin expecting to attend if Vrabel delivers another turnaround + builds lasting team bonds.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • The Archbishop Hoban girls basketball team won 60-26 on Senior Night at Berry Gymnasium on Feb. 8, 2026, with All-Ohioan Niera Stevens returning from a knee injury (she posted four points and two steals) to boost hopes for a strong postseason run.  Akron Beacon Journal
