- ➤ The City of Akron held public meetings about preserving part of the former Firestone plant including its clock tower at 1200 Firestone Parkway. The Urban Design and Historic Preservation Committee will consider alternatives on Feb. 17 as community feedback and state guidelines (SHPO) help guide funding eligibility for demolition. Akron.com
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The University of Akron is digitizing more than 45,000 negatives captured by Horace and Evelyn Stewart from the mid-20th century to share the story of Akron’s historic Black neighborhoods. The archive includes family photos and images of local businesses that help new generations connect with their past. Signal Akron
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ At the Feb. 9 board meeting, Akron Public Schools reported a slight financial improvement with an updated forecast that shows operation in the black through fiscal year 2029 as challenges grow if current spending continues. The board honored 106-year-old Mary Weems Lee, a devoted community member. Akron.com
- ➤ APS Board of Education welcomed three new members and new leadership to boost transparency and financial stability, and it will host a cluster meeting on Feb. 19 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Ellet Community Learning Center to engage community members in its upcoming plans. Akron.com
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Cuyahoga Falls City Council approved a $3.3 million contract with Vizmeg Landscape & a $500,000 ODNR grant for the second phase of the Mud Brook Trail. Work begins mid-March at Bath Road extending to Peoplecare Park Drive, with full completion expected by summer 2027. Akron.com
- ➤ City officials in Akron are addressing 42 new tenant complaints at Spring Hill Apartments regarding issues such as mold, pests and broken facilities at the Everton Road property (complaints also include flooding and broken sinks). City representatives are following up with tenants and monitoring repairs ordered in January. Akron Beacon Journal
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Cleveland Clinic Akron General resumed normal visitation hours Wednesday afternoon after a Saturday water main break disrupted services and damaged key areas. Hospital officials said full patient care and visits have been restored, although the Emergency Department remains on diversion for trauma (appointment restrictions continue). WKYC
REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ Residents at Summit Ridge Apartments along Independence Avenue experienced days without hot water when a management error led to a complete water shutoff. Water was restored by mid-afternoon and management said extra oversight is now in place (the finance employee has been let go). News 5 Cleveland

- ➤ Local swimmers begin the OHSAA postseason today at the University of Akron’s Ocasek Natatorium, with meets at Cleveland State University and Canton following. - ➤ On Feb. 5, Firestone Community Learning Center's girls basketball team beat Barberton High School 50 to 16. Firestone finished the game with an 8 to 10 record while Barberton held an 0 to 20 record (a tough season for them). Akron.com
