  • A Northfield grandmother won a $250,000 jackpot on a scratch-off ticket after an unexpected detour at Sagamore Quik Check — she had forgotten the ticket in her car's glove compartment for three days — and after taxes she will receive $183,125 as she plans to spoil her grandchildren.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Bricco West in Fairlawn will close on Saturday, Feb. 28 as owners Dave and Stacy Sharp retire after 36 years in business. The restaurant invites locals for one last martini (a nod to its famed Italian menu).  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Akron native Ryan DeAlexandro & fellow dancers are rehearsing a new piece, 'Eternal,' by choreographer Avree Walker at Ohio Contemporary Ballet. The practice is part of preparations for upcoming performances.  Akron Beacon Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mail carriers will rally at 1655 West Market Street in Akron at 3 p.m. Sunday to demand better pay, permanent hires, and safety protections amid recent incidents (one occurred last December). Union leaders aim to influence policy for the more than 260,000 carriers.  News 5 Cleveland

HEALTH NEWS

  • At Akron Children's Hospital and Cleveland Clinic, doctors use AI to draft appointment notes and reduce after-hours charting today; the tool frees up more face-time with patients while doctors review results for accuracy (often called pajama time).  WKYC
  • The University of Akron’s BETA Lab received a $200K American Heart Association award to develop heart valve implants using shape memory polymers — a less invasive alternative to metal valves. The lab in Auburn Science Engineering Center plans to test the new valves in animal models before clinical trials.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Melania Cornute stands out for St. Vincent-St. Mary with her strong work ethic as she averages 22 points, 9.5 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals per game, earning second-team All-Ohio honors.   • Daniel Espino, a former top prospect who underwent two major shoulder surgeries and four years of rehab, returned to the Guardians' spring training facility in Goodyear on Feb. 16.
