- ➤ Imira Cobb, an eighth grader at Litchfield Community Learning Center, won the APS district spelling bee yesterday at downtown headquarters by spelling words including P-R-O-T-O-T-Y-P-E correctly to earn a trophy + $150 Visa gift card. - ➤ Akron Public Schools presented a plan to cut $11 million from its nearly $386 million budget by reducing staffing and program costs, according to Superintendent Mary Outley who outlined the proposal on Feb. 23; the board is set to vote on the measures on March 9 (affecting 19,000 students). - ➤ Former Barberton High basketball players will hold a free event Saturday, March 28 from 2-5 p.m. at the high school auditorium to celebrate the 50th anniversary state title (featuring storytelling, a performance by singer-songwriter Teddy Robb and the launch of the Jack Greynolds Memorial Scholarship).
