COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Last Friday, the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank launched its 35th annual Harvest for Hunger campaign at John S. Knight Center (Feb. 27) to provide 4.8 million meals for local communities facing food insecurity. The campaign follows a record 32.8 million meals served in 2025 amid federal and state food cuts.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse will reopen Friday, March 6 at 4073 Medina Road in Akron after a $1.8 million renovation. Owners added a banquet room, doubled bar, live piano music, and valet parking while updating the menu with more seafood.  Cleveland.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Akron Children's Museum will celebrate its 10th birthday on Saturday, March 7 at downtown Crafty Steere. The event features piano and dance shows, casino tables, raffle prizes and food; doors open at 6 p.m. with VIP hour (6–7 p.m.), and free weekend parking is available.  News 5 Cleveland

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On Feb. 26, The Beacon Journal compared grocery prices at Acme, Aldi, Giant Eagle and Walmart and found a 0.2% rise in staple food costs in January to help Akron shoppers plan their budgets.  Akron Beacon Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, ODOT will close the southbound lanes of the All-America Bridge to finish structural repairs and install a new rust-resistant fence; traffic must detour via Tallmadge Avenue to Howard Street to Martin Luther King Boulevard.   • City officials announced Feb. 27 that Akron-Peninsula Road in Cuyahoga Falls is closed between Ira and Bolanz roads for repairs until further notice.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Proposals to limit grouse hunting are set to be reviewed by the Ohio Wildlife Council in April, prompted by declines in the bird population. New measures will adjust deer limits and surveillance zones across several counties, with public comments accepted until April 1 (details are on wildohio.gov).  Akron Beacon Journal
  • At Summit County Courthouse on Feb. 27, legal experts including Probate Court Magistrate Job Perry discussed Black history in the courts and ways to boost minority judgeship representation, drawing nearly two dozen community members to examine how civil rights victories paved the way for more Black legal professionals.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Northeast Ohio hospitals are using artificial intelligence to read scans and alert doctors about high-risk cases. Akron General and local facilities are partnering with tech companies to tailor workflows — training physicians on the AI’s benefits while keeping patients safe.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Walsh Jesuit junior Andrew Gerstenmaier placed third in the 100-yard backstroke at the state meet held at C.T. Branin Natatorium on Saturday, Feb. 28 & local swimmers from the Firestone Akron Swim Team will resume training on Tuesday.  Akron Beacon Journal
