COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Akron charities are hosting new events this week. Haven of Rest Women’s Auxiliary will offer a reptile show and luncheon at 175 E. Market St. on March 3 (no reservations required), while Happy Tails Thrift Shop unveils a VIP purse sale on March 16, with additional fundraisers planned later.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Harvey Russell—known as The Singing Policeman—balanced a career in music and policing in Akron until his 1991 retirement. His 1960s hit recordings and three decades of service remain celebrated locally today.  Akron Beacon Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mindy McGinnis’ YA novel 'How Girls Are Made' is earning buzz among older teens and she will join the fourth annual Akron Book Fest (11 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 7) with panels and workshops at Loganberry Books, while Elizabeth Zaleski promotes her latest essay collection.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Local theater group Apollo’s Fire will perform The Palace of Versailles at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on March 5 at 7:30 p.m. in Akron — the production brings to life the tale of Louis XIV, the Sun King.  Akron Beacon Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Imira Cobb (a Litchfield CLC student) won the APS Spelling Bee Championship by correctly spelling her final word. Her achievement boosts confidence in local academic talent.  Akron Beacon Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Akron officials will remove two decaying dams and restore riverbanks along a one-mile stretch of the Little Cuyahoga River in Middlebury using a $2.8 million federal grant, with work beginning this summer and finishing by summer (2027).  Signal Akron

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Akron is flying its city flags at half-staff today through March 7 to honor Rev. Jesse Jackson in memory of his contributions. The unanimous resolution was approved by Mayor Shammas Malik and City Council President Margo Sommerville.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Hiram Mayor Anne Haynam announced the fire/EMS services closed Sunday night after Chief Bill Byers retired and will stay suspended until an interim chief is named – the decision follows unexpected resignations and internal challenges.  Akron Beacon Journal

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Strickland's Frozen Custard will reopen its Akron and Streetsboro shops on March 6 to kick off ice cream season, offering a 90-cent cone special (opening day deal) as other local shops stay open year-round.  Akron Beacon Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Residents at Summit Ridge apartments in Chapel Hill faced ongoing issues like no heat, water damage, and opaque faucet water, which residents documented on Feb. 23 (some even had to boil water for dishes) while property manager Elizabeth Bagley has been notified.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Medina native Drew Allar, a Penn State quarterback with a longstanding love for the Browns, had an informal interview with the team’s quarterback coach during the NFL combine in Indianapolis, and his dream of playing for the Browns may come true if he is selected in the April draft.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • On Feb. 28, Northeast Ohio high school wrestling sectionals concluded with multiple team titles and sectional champions crowned among Akron and Canton teams. Local stars — including winners from Fitch, Louisville and Avon Lake — advanced to district competitions.  Akron Beacon Journal
