CULTURE NEWS

  • Hale Farm and Village starts its Maple Sugar Festival and Pancake Breakfasts today at 10 a.m., where visitors see maple sap turned into syrup and enjoy a traditional breakfast; tickets cost $25 for adults and $16 for kids and events continue on Saturday and Sunday weekends throughout March.  Akron Beacon Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Akron Public Schools is hosting its 70th STEM Expo today at the Ellet Community Learning Center on Woolf Ave—featuring over 200 student projects, a bridge-breaking competition, interactive booths starting at 9 a.m. and a reptile show from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.  Akron Beacon Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Weather Service warns that strong to severe storms will develop this afternoon in Greater Akron, bringing damaging winds and isolated tornadoes before skies clear by tomorrow with a high in the 50s.  Akron Beacon Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The county SNAP update cuts the child exemption and ups work requirements; about 16,000 benefits recipients, including many seniors, may lose aid if they do not work or volunteer 20 hours weekly. Summit County services are fielding constant phone calls & inquiries as residents seek help with the changes.  News 5 Cleveland
  • Schneider Park in Akron will be renamed Schneider Memorial Park in memory of former Summit County Infirmary patients buried on the site. City Council passed a resolution this week and Mayor Malik supports the change.  iHeartMedia

SPORTS NEWS

  • Archbishop Hoban's girls basketball team advanced to the state semifinals after beating Twinsburg 76-50 in the Division II Region 5 final on March 5 in Wadsworth. Senior Niera Stevens led with 20 points and the semifinal game will be held on Friday, Mar. 13 at a site to be announced.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Akron’s Zips men's basketball team hosted NIU on Friday, March 6, at Rhodes Arena to close their regular season home games — they honored five seniors before the contest as the team tried to set a program record with 31 consecutive wins.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • STVM and Notre Dame Academy will face off in a Division III girls basketball final today at Elida Fieldhouse at 3 p.m. The game spots key players such as Sydney Ferguson & Kallie Thames as both teams vie for victory.  Akron Beacon Journal
