- ➤ Summit Metro Parks is nominating the site of former Wheelock Cuyahoga Acres in Cascade Valley Metro Park (Akron’s only known Black rural community) for the National Register of Historic Places. The nomination process, supported by University of Akron research, will help preserve this pioneering racially integrated neighborhood from the mid-1900s. Signal Akron
- ➤ Local charities will host fundraisers with events planned from March 16 to June 5. The Humane Society of Summit County holds a purse sale and VIP event at Happy Tails Thrift Shop on March 16 — and similar celebrations, including bingo nights and award shows, are set across the region. - ➤ Deerfield Ag Services in Deerfield became employee-owned through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan that took effect on Feb. 1 after the founding Wallbrown family worked with Kent State (helping to maintain local independence).
