CULTURE NEWS

  • Ballet Excel Ohio will present Aladdin on Mar. 14 and 15 at Akron Civic Theatre, with showings at 2 p.m. and in the evening; tickets cost $27 per pair.  Cleveland.com
  • The University of Akron will launch an online trivia quiz about its mascot, Zippy, today. The quiz offers readers a chance to learn about the tryouts and unique lore of one of the few female mascots in the country (described as bubbly and sassy by UA officials).  Akron Beacon Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Registration is open for Akron Zoo day camps for kids + families and teens, with full day camps for ages 6 to 12, half day camps for teens 13 to 16, and family camp for children 3 and older. Camp programs offer animal encounters, themed activities, and a zookeeper experience.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Akron Public Schools can avoid laying off 18 teachers next school year while cutting $11 million from the operating budget. Superintendent Mary Outley presented new recommendations (including fewer staffing cuts) on March 9, and the board may vote on the proposal on March 23.  Akron Beacon Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Old Farmer's Almanac released its Last Frost Date Map, which shows that Akron is expected to finish frost on April 30 while parts of Southwest Ohio see an earlier end. Local gardeners can plan early planting ahead of spring's official start on March 20 (the equinox marks the season change).  Akron Beacon Journal

FINANCE NEWS

  • 7 17 Credit Union will open two new Akron locations – a Wallhaven branch on April 6 at 1 N. Hawkins Ave. and a downtown branch later this spring. The credit union plans affordable housing initiatives and financial literacy education, part of a $50 million investment.  Akron Beacon Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • A veterinary mobile clinic offered pet care on Tuesday, Mar. 10 in Akron—helping local pet owners access essential services. The program is part of ongoing efforts to deliver care directly to community pets.  Cleveland 19 News
  • Akron Children's Hospital will open a new pediatric primary care office at Boys + Girls Clubs' Broadway Club in Cleveland in October. The facility will offer in-person and telehealth services for club members and community kids up to age 21 from four counties.  Cleveland.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Archbishop Hoban boys basketball won (66-51) over Garfield Heights on Tuesday, March 10 at Medina High School, extending their season to the Elite Eight. Their regional final is set for Friday against Gates Mills Hawken or Youngstown Chaney.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • The Ohio High School Athletic Association will run its state wrestling tournaments at Value City Arena from Friday through Sunday. Returning team and individual champions in Division I, II, III boys events and the girls tournament will contest updated schedules.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Residents can vote for the Akron-Area High School Athlete of the Week for March 2-8; the poll is open until 5 p.m. on March 12 (winners, one boy and one girl, will be announced Friday morning on BeaconJournal.com).  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Five Guardians players are showing promise in spring training today in Goodyear, Ariz. Chase DeLauter, Angel Martinez, Petey Halpin, Khalil Watson and Daniel Espino are battling for roster spots — their performances suggest strong potential for Opening Day.  Akron Beacon Journal
