COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Akron are preparing Greek pastries (including galaktoboureko) for the annual Easter Bake Sale, which will be held soon.  Akron Beacon Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Krazy Bins will close its Kent store on March 19 and open a 58,000 sqft location in Akron (the former Roses Discount Store on Buchholzer Boulevard) on April 24 to offer a better shopping experience, owner Noah Leavitt said.  Akron Beacon Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Akron Zoo introduced its new yellow-backed duikers, Finn and Silvie, on Friday, Mar. 13. They settled into the Landon + Cynthia Knight Pride of Africa area and will debut publicly when warmer weather arrives.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Downtown Akron Partnership will hold its free Sakura Festival on Saturday, April 4 from 1-7 p.m. at downtown locations including Lock 2, Lock 3 & Towpath Trailhead, where visitors can enjoy vendor booths, live music and cultural displays.  Cleveland.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On March 11, strong storms produced three EF-0 tornadoes in Shelby and Auglaize counties and a damaging microburst in Upper Sandusky that injured two people. The National Weather Service surveys confirmed the events and no fatalities were reported in Ohio.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • On Friday, Akron saw high winds up to 60 mph that caused power outages in Summit, Portage, and Medina counties and led to travel restrictions on the Ohio Turnpike for large vehicles (restrictions were in effect until midnight), with FirstEnergy slowing power restoration (crews avoided bucket trucks in high gusts).  Akron Beacon Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Greater Akron Chamber and city partners plan to revitalize downtown by boosting foot traffic, safety, housing, and community spaces (building on recent $60 million improvements on South Main and Lock 3) with new projects expected to attract business in the coming years.  Akron Beacon Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • 11-year-old Levi Buxman finished his cancer treatment at Akron Children’s hospital on Friday. His family and staff gathered to mark his milestone by ringing the bell, and he now looks forward to returning to activities (including swimming) as he recovers.  Signal Akron

  • The Akron Zips will face the Kent State Golden Flashes in the MAC tournament semifinals with tipoff at 7:30 p.m. ET at Rocket Arena in Cleveland. Fans can watch on CBS Sports Network or stream the game via Paramount+.  Akron Beacon Journal
