Good morning, Akron. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 15th of March.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The International Institute of Akron shifted its approach after federal funding cuts ended its refugee resettlement programs, so its team now helps families who arrived in December or early January get needed medical care, housing, and job support (this move stopped any staff layoffs). Volunteers also assist as the nonprofit awaits federal reimbursement and plans its next steps.  News 5 Cleveland

CULTURE NEWS

  • Vintage photos show 100 years of Akron spelling bee history starting in 1925 — featuring local students who advanced to national competitions. The archive documents key milestones that celebrate the city’s educational achievements.  Akron Beacon Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • A report by KFF Health News finds that rural, low-income Ohio communities now face a triple challenge—insufficient primary care, mental health services and broadband access—with counties like Carroll, Meigs, Monroe, Pike and Vinton identified as full dead zones. The study shows Ohio’s rural residents suffer from poorer health measures and fewer ways to get care, which may worsen as shortages grow.  News 5 Cleveland
  • International Delight recalled 75,054 bottles of coffee creamer after spoilage complaints led the FDA to classify the recall as Class II on March 12—consumers in Ohio and other states are advised to throw the product away or return it for a refund.  Akron Beacon Journal
