  • The Akron Zoo is hiring for full-time and seasonal positions—seasonal staff will work from April 1 to December 31 and help with food service and horticulture.  Cleveland 19 News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Akron received a $90,000 grant from the Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund Small Business Boost initiative that will let business owners and entrepreneurs get financial counseling at the Akron Financial Empowerment Center — a service run by United Way of Summit and Medina where counselors help with making budgets, setting savings goals and reducing debt.  Cleveland.com
  • Data from GasBuddy on Monday showed that drivers in Akron paid $2.90 per gallon after a 1.9 cent rise while prices in Cleveland held at $2.90—both below the national average of $3.02 per gallon. Experts warn that with slowing demand and economic challenges, prices may remain low for now.  WKYC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students in the 1920s chose the name Zippers for the University of Akron teams to honor the local rubber industry—later shortened to Zips—and a suggestion in 1953 led to a kangaroo mascot named Zippy who debuted at a game in 1955. She will turn 71 on May 1 and remains a proud symbol of the school’s unique heritage.  Akron Beacon Journal
