COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Coach Jada Haines mentors young girls at Ladies First Akron using basketball and life skills training to boost their confidence. The organization will host its free Life After Sports Summit on Mar. 22 at Ed Davis Community Center (the first 100 girls in grades 3 to 8 can register).  Akron Beacon Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Norton Raceway Park (formerly Barberton Speedway) closed permanently as its new owner, Keith Luck, will use the 27-acre property to expand his neighboring Mulch Makers of Ohio. An online auction for the raceway’s equipment is scheduled from March 27 to April 2.  Akron Beacon Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Akron celebrates 330 Day with citywide festivities. House Three Thirty hosts a free party on March 28 with live music and art classes (including a sound bath and circus acts) while other events, like a university-hosted game and a community run, take place on March 30.  Signal Akron

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sandy Womack, an Akron Public Schools graduate, was named the new superintendent for Twinsburg City Schools. He brings 33 years of experience and will start his three-year contract on Aug. 1 (salary: $155,000).  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Schumacher CLC Parent Teacher Association is hosting Tech at the Table, a free event for Akron elementary school parents and caregivers to learn about screen readiness and healthy digital habits this Friday at 1020 Hartford Avenue with food and giveaways provided; doors open at 5:45 p.m. (registration encouraged).  News 5 Cleveland
  • Akron Public Schools will open two new buildings in Kenmore in August 2028, where Pfeiffer Elementary and Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts will replace the old high school. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • NASA reported that a seven-ton asteroid exploded over northeast Ohio on Tuesday, sending a fireball across Medina County and causing a sonic boom heard in nearby states — local residents are now searching for fragments.  iHeartMedia

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • ODOT and INDOT are testing automated freight trucks with lane keeping and automatic braking on Interstate 70 and other highways to improve safety. The study will end next summer and results will be shared with the U.S. Department of Transportation.  News 5 Cleveland

HEALTH NEWS

  • Darren Hampton, a 16-year-old native who battled leukemia with humor and resilience, was celebrated at a homegoing service on March 7 at Second Baptist Church in Medina. He kept his spirits high while studying at APS Online and uplifting family & friends.  Akron Beacon Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • On March 18, 330 college wrestlers practiced at Rocket Arena in Cleveland to get ready for the 2026 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, with local wrestlers from Greater Akron/Canton among the 36 Ohio competitors—ESPN will stream tournament sessions on March 19 and in the coming days.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Akron guard Shammah Scott made two clutch 3-pointers in the MAC Tournament, leading his team to a 79-76 win over Toledo on March 13 and earning a spot in the NCAA Tournament; Akron will face Texas Tech at 12:40 p.m. Friday in Tampa.  Akron Beacon Journal
