CRIME NEWS

  • A 49-year-old Barberton man cut the gas line at his home on 15th Street Northwest and threatened to ignite it on Tuesday evening—leading to an hours-long SWAT standoff, the evacuation of nearby homes, a technical gas shutdown and his arrest after treatment for medical issues.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Jon Tae Von Angelo Nelson, 30, was arrested on Wednesday in Akron after he allegedly fired at police during a traffic stop—U.S. marshals charged him with assault on a police officer and weapons violations.  Cleveland.com
  • Akron Police investigated the shooting deaths of 26 year old Elliot Aletesa and 44 year old Jessica Violand — an apparent murder-suicide — when officers found their bodies in a bedroom at a home on South Highland Avenue on Monday night.  iHeartMedia

CULTURE NEWS

  • Akron is celebrating its 200th anniversary with many bicentennial events planned through December—this includes a museum grand opening on April 5, lantern lighting downtown on the same day, a musical concert on April 22, and additional history talks, sports tournaments and parades in the coming months.  Signal Akron

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 1,800 Akron Public Schools 5th graders participated in an interactive performance at the Akron Civic Theatre on March 19th, playing recorders with the Akron Symphony Orchestra as part of the Link Up program by Carnegie Hall. Music teachers from Akron and Stow-Munroe Falls City School District led the students through jazz pieces and explained the different sections of the orchestra.  Signal Akron
  • Fifth grader M’Kenzie Young won The Amazing Shake competition—a pilot program by Akron Schools teaching essential professional skills. The contest featured 165 students from six schools practicing etiquette like firm handshakes and eye contact, and the program may expand to all APS fifth graders next school year pending budget approval.  Signal Akron

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ward 2 Councilman Phil Lombardo has tracked burnt-out streetlights on Creighton Avenue for six years and tied a bright pink ribbon — a signal for First Energy to fix the lights. Local residents said they feel safer when the lights work and Lombardo said he will continue marking outages until every streetlight is repaired.  News 5 Cleveland
