COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Five groups in Akron are working to fight hunger in food deserts by providing groceries, hot meals and other support to local residents. Patricia Ann Cargill Charities distributes food on Wednesdays—while Food Rescue US, Good Neighbors, Good Samaritan Hunger Center and OPEN M Ministry help with food pickups, pantries and services that improve health and job skills.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Akron and nearby communities will celebrate 330 Day from March 28-30 to honor the local area code, with the ASCVB urging residents to wear locally-themed clothes and share photos on social media to join a contest offering a $330 prize package + a donation to the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank in the winner’s name. Various events including live music, circus acts and a community concert at the Akron Civic Theatre on March 30 will feature during the weekend.  Akron.com

  • Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens opens its season on April 1 with buy one get one free admission when visitors donate a food item for the Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank—an Easter Egg Hunt is set for April 19 and the Manor House will host Inspiration in Bloom from April 24 to April 27 featuring local floral designs.  Akron Beacon Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At the March 17 meeting, Akron City Council approved a $5.6 million agreement with ODOT for All American Bridge improvements this summer — the upgrades will include deck patching, net installation to catch falling concrete and replacement of a 6-foot fence with an 8-foot one at an extra city cost of $288,000, with construction to begin this summer and finish in the fall.  Akron.com
  • The NTSB report said that four Northeast Ohio bridges—namely I-490, Main Avenue, Detroit Avenue, and Carnegie Avenue—will be evaluated for collapse risk if struck by larger cargo vessels. The review will focus on these pre-1991 structures as changes in vessel size since the 1950s may pose new hazards.  Cleveland 19 News
  • At its March 10 meeting, Bath Township Trustees approved seasonal job postings for the Service Department and Parks Division starting March 11 and hired Laurie Saunier as a communications specialist to begin March 30. They also approved transfers, contract extensions, and an emergency law enforcement agreement — and will meet again on March 24 at the Bath Center Building.  Akron.com

  • In Akron, health experts say spring is a great time to clean your home to reduce allergens, change your diet to include fresh whole foods, and drink more water to boost your health. They recommend a daily 20-minute walk and spending 10 minutes outdoors — without screens — to help your body get needed vitamin D.  WKYC
