COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local nonprofit has run its Shower Bus program to offer mobile shower services for the homeless, helping them regain dignity and hope. The service, which began recently, is now available at several locations in Akron (details provided by the organization).  Cleveland 19 News
  • Meteorite hunters searched Medina County after a 7-ton meteor hit on March 17 and created a sonic boom that rattled local buildings. Roberto Vargas (from Connecticut) found rare Eucrite fragments and plans to donate some pieces to aid scientific study, marking the first such fall in over 20 years.  News 5 Cleveland

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Akron Children's and UA joined forces to create a dual faculty appointment to boost training for future pediatric nurse practitioners (enhancing clinical placements and curriculum) and improve care for young patients. The initiative began March 21 and is set to help fill open positions at Akron Children's.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • On March 21, Akron Public Schools broke ground on a 170,000 sqft facility in Kenmore that will house Pfeiffer Elementary and Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts, serving 750 students and 90 staff in a project set to open in August 2028 (a boost for the community).  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Local high school sports updates cover season openers and key wins from March 16–22 as teams including Copley, Revere, and Hoban posted strong showings in softball, lacrosse, and volleyball games.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Bud Wentz, founder of Fear the Roo Collective, helped Akron retain key basketball players by offering financial support—efforts that coach John Groce credits for building a winning culture leading to recent tournament success.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • The NCAA Wrestling Championships had a strong turnout at Rocket Arena (in Northeast Ohio) on March 21, drawing over 17,000 fans per session and featuring local favorite Jesse Mendez (winner of his third national title at 141).
