ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Akron Firefighters battled a fire at Akron Ellet CSC Fieldhouse on Tuesday that destroyed all the new weight room equipment bought with funds raised—Brook Park Recreation Center opened at noon on March 26 and will open again today to start demolition.  News 5 Cleveland

  • A jury on Wednesday found Akron tax preparer Mustafa Diab guilty of fraudulently using his clients’ information to take $700K in COVID-19 relief funds—money intended for struggling businesses and the unemployed during the pandemic.  Cleveland.com
  • On March 25, Akron police executed a search warrant at a home on Johnston Street and arrested 29-year-old Paul Messenger — who faces charges for firearms violations and drug trafficking — after finding several guns, drugs, cash; he was held in Summit County Jail and was scheduled for arraignment yesterday.  Cleveland 19 News

  • Rankin Elementary School in West Akron closed in 2012 and is being demolished after standing for a century—marking the end of its long history in the community.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Akron police officers started new ICAT training to learn how to use empathy and open talk to calm tense situations—patrol officers began the training yesterday, cadets will train this summer and detectives by year-end.  News 5 Cleveland

  • USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced a voluntary recall of about 29,541 pounds of Chomps Original Beef and Turkey Sticks by Idaho Smokehouse Partners after two consumer complaints found metal pieces in the product—Costco customers in Ohio and 21 other states are urged to return the items for a refund.  Akron Beacon Journal
