ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On March 12, a 6-year-old boy in the Copley-Fairlawn City School District awoke alone in a school bus parked in the district’s garage after a substitute driver skipped required safety checks, and the driver was terminated while the district reviews its transportation protocols.  News 5 Cleveland

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Babcock & Wilcox’s stock reached a nearly eight-year high last week at $16.24 after the company announced a $2.4B power generation project aimed at powering increased AI use. The Akron-based firm also reported strong Q4 2025 earnings that increased investor trust.  Akron Beacon Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Summit Artspace, housed in a nearly 100-year-old building, reopened in March after seven months of renovations that improved accessibility and gallery space. The venue will host a grand reopening party on Thursday, April 9 from 5 to 9:30 p.m. featuring live performances and food by the Green Dragon Inn.  Signal Akron

EDUCATION NEWS

  • CFMS quiz bowl team defended its state title on March 14 by winning an 8-0 record over 32 teams and beating St-Raphael School in the final match. The team will compete at the Middle School National Championship Tournament in Chicago on Mother’s Day weekend.  Akron.com
  • At its March 23 meeting, Akron Public Schools discussed an $11 million budget cut that may remove staff — including deans while public members urged alternatives to avoid impacting classroom learning. The board approved a tentative union agreement and plans to adjust student assignments at Jennings CLC on April 13.  Akron.com

  • During its March 23 meeting downtown, Summit County Council heard from Nathan Jarosz about the LITE program that trains local students — and from Stephanie Carothers on call delays and staffing cuts at Job and Family Services due to new rules.  Akron.com
  • Akron officials released the Innerbelt Master Plan yesterday to redevelop a neighborhood affected by highway construction. The plan outlines over 4,500 homes and business sites, but community members and leaders say it falls short in addressing historic harms while noting its broad community engagement.  Akron Beacon Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A Philadelphia design firm has proposed redeveloping Quaker Square in downtown Akron by adding a hotel, apartments, retail, and a glass rooftop restaurant; phase one is expected to open in third quarter 2027 (pending tax credits) and will preserve the complex’s historic character while introducing modern amenities.  Signal Akron

  • The Cavaliers are counting on Evan Mobley to step up as a vocal defensive leader after the team struggled in recent games. His improved on-court communication + support from teammates is expected to boost defense as the playoffs approach.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Akron-area high school basketball players were named to the All-Ohio teams across multiple divisions after announcements on March 25 and 26. Tallmadge junior Chad Rusinko earned Division III Second Team honors (he averaged 25.5 points per game) as more stars from Hoban, St. Vincent-St. Mary and other schools received accolades.  Akron Beacon Journal
