COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Visitors are encouraged to wear blue for free admission on Wednesday, Apr. 8 at the Akron Zoo to support Child Abuse Prevention Month in partnership with Summit County Children Services. The zoo will be open (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) with free parking.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • After 21 years, Edgar’s restaurant closes today at 530 Nome Avenue overlooking Good Park Golf Course. The venue invites the community to celebrate with live music as its bar & kitchen remain open until 12:30 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. on Saturday.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • GOJO Industries, based in Akron, is now rebranded as Clorox Purell after a $2.25 billion acquisition by The Clorox Company. It will remain at GOJO Plaza in downtown Akron and at its facilities (Cuyahoga Falls, Wooster, and Ashland) following the April 1 announcement.  Akron Beacon Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Akron Zoo welcomed rescued mountain lion cubs Ozette (pink nose) and Neah (black nose) on Thursday, April 2 as fans watched their daily appearances in a new outdoor enclosure until about 12:30 p.m. The zoo also introduced yellow-backed duikers to join its animal lineup.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • The United States Air Force F-16 Viper Demo Team will perform aerobatic maneuvers over Akron during the Props and Pistons Festival on Aug. 15-16 at Akron-Fulton Airport. The air show will include historic aircraft tours, flying demonstrations, and a classic car show.  Akron Beacon Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On March 31, the National Weather Service confirmed three tornadoes in Ohio that caused property damage but no injuries. The strongest touched down near Chesterland in Geauga County at 5:49 p.m. and was rated EF1 with winds reaching 100 mph — crews surveyed the damage on April 2.  Akron Beacon Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Akron basketball player Sharron Young announced on April 3 via social media that he will enter the NCAA transfer portal. The portal opens on April 7 (with a 15-day window) while Young thanked the Zips and left open the possibility of returning.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • The Akron RubberDucks have launched a digital Ballpark Pass for the 2026 season that gives fans access to all 69 home games at 7 17 Credit Union Park. The pass offers an individual plan at $99 + a family plan at $199 available online.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • After winning their Opening Day game, the Akron RubberDucks began the season at 7 17 Credit Union Park under new ownership from Prospector Baseball Group and a naming rights deal with a local credit union — which invested over $50 million in Akron.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • An Akron youth boxing clinic will offer kids a spring break alternative by hosting training sessions at a local community center; the event will promote physical fitness and skill-building during the break.  Cleveland 19 News
