- ➤ Several community fundraisers are scheduled in the Akron-Canton area. Highlights include Walsh University’s Business Club Scholarship Luncheon on April 10 in North Canton, Falls Cancer Club events on April 17 in Cuyahoga Falls and at Akron Civic Theatre, and additional charity events through May and June. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ John Legend will perform an evening of songs and stories at 8 p.m. April 11 at the Akron Civic Theatre (182 S. Main St.), adding a star act to a week packed with local music events. Akron Beacon Journal
- ➤ Akron native Kayla Hardy has released her debut historical fantasy, The Quarter Queen, which blends voodoo and Catholic tradition in 1840s New Orleans + the novel is available in hardcover for $30 from Ballantine. Akron Beacon Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Sacred Heart Academy, a private Catholic school at Broadway and State Street, educated students from kindergarten to 12th grade from 1904 until its closure in June 1946. The Sisters of St. Dominic sold the school to A. Polsky Co. which later replaced the building with a parking deck. Akron Beacon Journal

- ➤ The Walker family seeks a conditional-use permit to rezone the former Eastwood Swim Park in Goodyear Heights into a defense education training facility for local emergency services such as fire + EMS, police, and SWAT teams. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Summa Health in Akron is the first in Ohio to offer an incision-free weight-loss procedure using the MagDI System, which uses magnets to connect parts of the small intestine and lower recovery time and pain. A Massillon resident lost 12 pounds in one month after the surgery. Akron Beacon Journal
- ➤ Ideal Baking Company voluntarily recalled its Breakfast Bread because it was found to contain an undisclosed soy allergen that may affect those with soy sensitivity. The product has been available since 2020 at outlets such as the Lakemore store and Acme Fresh Market in Akron. Akron Beacon Journal
