  • The Ohio Rubber Duck Dash will take place on April 27 at Waterworks Park in Cuyahoga Falls as a student-run fundraiser where participants buy a duck for $5 to compete for prizes. The duck race will start at 2 p.m. with winners announced at 2:45 p.m.—an event hosted by the Six District EntrepreNEW Pathways program.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • The Akron Zoo announced that two barn owl chicks hatched on March 5th and March 6th—marking the first time the zoo’s resident owls have been parents. The younger chick is being hand-raised while the older remains with its parents in the Gardner’s Shed near the entrance of Lehner Family Zoo Gardens.  Akron Beacon Journal

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Officials identified Amanda Crow-Sonntag as the 43-year-old victim of the Barberton apartment fire that occurred on April 14 — fire crews responded at 9:49 a.m. to control a first-floor blaze before discovering her — and investigators are still testing to determine her cause of death.  Akron Beacon Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • A family mourns as 25-year-old Nathan Flight was shot and killed in Barberton while trying to help a friend in a fight at home, and police report the suspect pepper sprayed and shot him several times—he is now in custody with a $1 million bond.  News 5 Cleveland

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Tuesday, April 22, the Tuesday Musical series in Akron will present the world premiere of Peter Boyer's Festive Fanfare for the city's bicentennial at E.J. Thomas Hall, with the full brass and percussion sections of the Cleveland Orchestra performing works by Mussorgsky and others—this concert will be recorded and shared with the public.  Cleveland.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three local professionals started KidsLink to offer combined educational and therapeutic services for children with autism and developmental disabilities in Northeast Ohio—beginning as an outpatient clinic before expanding into a school. The program, which has served families since 2007, now plans to grow its services with Chase support—targeting new programs in Montana and overseas markets.  Signal Akron
  • Akron Board of Education placed Superintendent Michael Robinson on leave after a four-month investigation into allegations of bullying, retaliation and a hostile work environment (voted 4-1 with two abstentions). Executive Director of Elementary Schools Mary Outley will serve as interim superintendent until the board decides next steps before its meeting on April 28.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Candidates N.J. Akbar, former APS board president and founder of B4U Services, and Bruce Bolden—appointed last year after James Hardy’s resignation—are competing for Akron’s Ward 8 City Council seat in the May 6 primary where the winner will be unopposed in November. Bolden said his focus is on public safety and local development while Akbar emphasized community engagement and small business support to meet Ward 8 residents’ needs.  Akron Beacon Journal
