  • House Three Thirty will host a Throwback Market on April 19 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. featuring over 40 retro-themed vendors selling nostalgic food, music, collectibles and apparel; the event offers free admission and parking at (532 W. Market St.).  Cleveland.com

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 21-year-old Barberton man died on April 15 when a tree branch fell on a house at 198 Second St. SW—teams from the Barberton Fire Department and Summit County Special Operations responded at 11:16 a.m. to remove the branch, and the incident is under investigation.  Akron.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Former FirstEnergy CEO Chuck Jones and former senior vice president Michael Dowling pleaded not guilty to racketeering charges and are accused of bribing state officials to get a bailout for the company’s nuclear plants as court filings dated April 11 showed Jones’ attorneys argued prosecutors might allege additional bribes to unnamed officials (names remain sealed).  Akron Beacon Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Composer Peter Boyer will conduct the world premiere of his new work Festive Fanfare for Akron’s Bicentennial on April 22 at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall—The Cleveland Orchestra’s brass and percussion sections will join other festive pieces as Tuesday Musical uses the fanfare to mark Akron’s 200th birthday.  Signal Akron
  • The Akron-based Hearts for Music special needs orchestra will perform at the Jubilee of Persons with Disabilities in Rome on April 29 — joining Italian musicians and possibly meeting Pope Francis during the event. The group of 14 musicians will travel with parents, volunteers, and a mini medical team as they fundraise to cover travel and accommodation costs.  WKYC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Akron school board voted down a contract to remove its control over which police officers serve in schools after months of negotiations with the city — the decision means that officers will continue to work in schools through the end of June while discussions for a new agreement continue.  Signal Akron
  • On April 17, Akron immigration lawyers said ICE removed longtime residents without access to court or an attorney and that some were sent to detention without a warrant (alleged due process violations). They added that agents might be using social media for enforcement and urged residents to secure legal help if approached.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Summit County voters will decide key ballot issues—including a state capital improvement program bond, library upgrades levy, and school district funding measures—on the May 6 primary. Early in-person voting began April 8 at the Summit County Board of Elections and absentee ballots can be requested until April 29, with ballots needing a postmark by the Sunday before Election Day.  Akron.com
