  • A candlelight vigil honoring Sam Rife, who died Saturday in a road accident, will be held tonight at 7 p.m. at Green Central Park Amphitheater (1795 Steese Road), led by Pastor David Weyrick and supported by Mayor Rocco Yeargin.  Akron Beacon Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • A series of cultural events unfolds this week in Akron and Cleveland, featuring Celtic Woman at Akron Civic Theatre on April 21, Broadway in Akron’s 'Stomp' on April 22-23, and David Sedaris at Keybank State Theatre on April 24 (with many more events scheduled).  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Akron Pizza Fest is set for Friday and Saturday, Aug. 28-29 at Lock 3 festival grounds on Main Street near the Akron Civic Theatre downtown. The fest—which remains free—features musical acts like Journey tribute E5C4P3 and Nashville’s Deck of Hearts, with pizza contest details to be announced.  Cleveland.com
  • Ravenna native Al Hodge originated the Green Hornet radio role in 1936 and later voiced characters on The Lone Ranger and became a TV star as Captain Video (locally called Abie). His career in early radio and television marked an important part of local history.  Akron Beacon Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Downtown Akron restaurants have struggled due to ongoing construction and rising costs. The Lockview (207 S. Main St.) launched a GoFundMe that raised $5,225 of its $6,000 goal, and local businesses have urged relief funds to help keep their doors open.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • GasBuddy data shows that gas prices in Akron fell 21.9 cents to $3.63 per gallon today while Cleveland dropped 15.3 cents to $3.70, yet experts warn prices may soon rise due to global oil uncertainty.  WKYC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Akron Public Schools is hosting a forum Tuesday at Firestone Community Learning Center (doors open at 5 p.m.) to address concerns over EdChoice vouchers, state legislation and funding challenges; school leaders including Pat Shipe and Mayor Shammas Malik will outline facts for community advocacy.  Signal Akron

  • Nurse Hannah Fleming from Tallmadge (a liver transplant survivor) now helps liver transplant patients at Cleveland Clinic Main Campus while also volunteering with the American Liver Foundation and training for the New York City Marathon.  Signal Akron

  • Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson said Thomas Bryant is ruled out for today's Game 2 in Cleveland because of a left calf strain. The Raptors listed Immanuel Quickley as questionable with a hamstring strain while guard Sam Merrill, with a mild hand issue, is expected to play.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • José Ramírez hit two home runs and Brayan Rocchio had three RBIs as the Guardians beat the Orioles 8 to 4 on Sunday. The win improved Cleveland’s record against Baltimore (38 to 21 since 2017) and moved Ramírez to second in home run count in Guardians history.  WKYC
