- ➤ Akron’s newly renovated Lock 3 park has unveiled its summer schedule with concerts, festivals, movie showings and other events for the bicentennial celebration. The program features 60 musical acts—including performances by Priscilla Block + Chris Janson—and new events like the Heart of Akron Festival from July 3-5 and Dogtoberfest on Sept. 13 following a $17+ million redevelopment. - ➤ Akron’s E.J. Thomas Hall hosted the premiere of Festive Fanfare for the bicentennial on April 22 with the Cleveland Orchestra’s brass and rhythm sections led by trumpeter Michael Sachs. - ➤ Akron Public Schools executives spent $16,616.65 last August on a day-and-a-half retreat at Geneva On-The-Lake using funds from a $250,000 grant even as voters had just raised taxes—while the district now faces $10 million in cuts and union leaders question the spending. The superintendent is on leave following a bullying investigation, and many teachers say the money could have been better used to support classrooms. FOX 8
