COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local events in Akron include a women's leadership forum at Portage Country Club on May 1 and a Hunger Walk at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Fairlawn on May 3 — a NAMI luncheon with TikTok star Kody Green is set for May 7, and more art and equality events follow.  Akron Beacon Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local author Robert Scott Ross, a Kenmore native and dean at Ohio University, releases his new novel Revival—a 408-page account set in 1984 that follows a tent revival at Akron Baptist Temple and its dramatic characters. The book is priced at $25 from Redhawk Publications.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Al Hodge, the Portage County actor known as Captain Video, starred in a 1950s sci-fi series that drove a fan craze and local events like Akron's Soap Box Derby. He later faced typecasting and remains a celebrated figure in history (Ravenna High inducted him in 1990).  Akron Beacon Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Akron Public Schools held a districtwide listening tour with low attendance at sites such as Garfield Community Learning Center (few families attended). Superintendent Mary Outley said officials will use feedback to boost outreach and adjust policies to better connect with families.  Signal Akron

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews are replacing the 112-year-old reservoir at Brittain Road and Newton Street after demolition was completed. They are constructing a smaller, efficient facility to match the nearby school and are working through rain delays that have slowed dirt compaction — builders expect the base to be ready in four to six weeks.  Signal Akron

SPORTS NEWS

  • Copley graduate Landon Robinson was chosen by the Cincinnati Bengals in the NFL Draft on Saturday, April 25 after a strong season at Navy that earned him AP All-American honors—he was picked at No. 226 overall.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • The 2026 PBA Tournament of Champions finals took place April 26 at 4 p.m. at AMF Riviera Lanes in Fairlawn. Five top bowlers competed for $100,000 in four match-play games - PBA Hall of Famers and Commissioner Tom Clark joined the live event on The CW.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Donovan Mitchell and James Harden struggled for the Cavaliers in Game 4 (Rocket Arena) as turnovers and missed shots tied the series 2-2. The team must rebound in Game 5 on April 29 to regain control of the matchup.  Akron Beacon Journal
