  • U.S. Marshals and Akron police arrested 33-year-old Michael Anthony Reid on Monday—wanted for strangulation and domestic violence—after he barricaded himself at a Stevens Road home during a brief SWAT situation that ended peacefully.  Cleveland 19 News

  • Akron residents can look forward to a busy weekend as Rialto Theatre kicks off its 10th anniversary celebration on Friday at the Kenmore club with concerts at 7 p.m. and dance companies perform at Firestone Community Learning Center on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. — the Akron Area Interfaith Council will host its 16th annual Hunger Walk on Sunday with registration beginning at 2 p.m. and the walk starting at 3 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church.  Signal Akron

  • An Akron resident named Arvind won $1 million on a VIP Millions scratch-off ticket purchased at Family Mini Mart on Forest Park Boulevard—he bought the $50 ticket and won last night. Arvind opted for the $500,000 cash option—netting him $360,000 after taxes, according to Ohio Lottery.  FOX 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mary Outley was chosen as the new superintendent of Akron Public Schools by a board vote (4-3) after serving as interim leader twice to stabilize the district. Outley, who began her career in 1990 as a teacher, said she will start by listening to staff and working to move the schools forward.  Signal Akron

  • Frank Stams, a former NFL player and now a Cuyahoga Falls councilman, said that sports and family helped build his strong sense of community during an interview at the YMCA. The 59-year-old added that teamwork from his high school days—lessons learned at St. Vincent-St. Mary—has guided his public service to unify all residents.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • An emergency room-based addiction nurse at Summa Health System said proposed Medicaid cuts to help fund a $5 trillion tax cut may leave nearly half of patients with opioid use disorder without treatment—he warned that reducing Medicaid funding will force hospitals to shoulder more uncompensated care costs while limiting access to essential medications for many Ohioans.  Akron Beacon Journal
