CRIME NEWS

  • Jalen Jackson, 24, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 90 that killed Akron doctor Curtis Birchall—an emergency room physician who also ran an anti-aging clinic. He was sentenced in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court on Wednesday and faces 26—34 years in prison with no possibility of early release.  FOX 8

  • The Ohio Lottery reported that Arvind, who bought a scratch-off ticket at Family Mini Mart on Forest Park Boulevard in Akron, won a million-dollar prize—and is now claiming the cash option to receive about $360,000 after taxes.  iHeartMedia

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On April 28, the APS Board met and accepted Michael Robinson’s resignation effective immediately with a plan to pay him $200,000 within 30 days — the board decided after an independent review found he broke APS policies — and they named interim superintendent Mary Outley as the new leader pending a contract.  Akron.com
  • The Akron Public Schools board named Interim Superintendent Mary Outley as the new head after the board approved a $200,000 resignation deal with former superintendent C. Michael Robinson — placed on paid leave following misconduct claims. Outley, who brings over 34 years of experience and previously served as executive director for school leadership, will work with educators, families, and community partners to boost student success.  Cleveland.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Akron will launch a hospital violence intervention program before the end of the year to meet gun violence victims at their bedsides and offer long-term case management. The program will work with Summa Health & Cleveland Clinic Akron General as part of the city’s broader public safety plan.  Signal Akron

HEALTH NEWS

  • The FDA recalled several types of bread sold at all 110 Ohio Giant Eagle stores and in six states because glass fragments were found on products sold from April 7 to April 12. Consumers are advised to dispose of the affected bread (Ancient Grains Hoagie roll, Multigrain Sourdough roll, and Whole Grain Multigrain roll) to avoid potential health risks while no injuries have been reported.  Akron Beacon Journal
