ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On May 1, a wall collapsed at the White Pond Reserve development in West Akron, killing one construction worker—investigators are working with the medical examiner's office to determine the cause and whether weather played a role.  Akron Beacon Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Medina native Matt Amodio, an Ohio State grad with a record on Jeopardy!, is competing in the Masters Tournament for $500,000 — he qualified by winning the Invitational Tournament and will face eight top champions in episodes airing on ABC and NE Ohio's WEWS-TV at 8 p.m.  Akron Beacon Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At its April 28 meeting, Summit County Council heard from the Ohio EPA that the Gorge Dam removal project is moving into its second phase with studies and design finished—mobilization is set to begin next month and sediment removal is expected later this summer with dam removal planned in about 3½ to 4 years. The council also honored the University of Akron men’s basketball team after a championship season and approved contracts for demolition at 2525 State Road, park closures at Gorge Metro Park beginning June 2, and resolutions naming May Foster Care Month, Mental Health Awareness Month and Older Americans Month.  Akron.com
  • Akron officials announced new measures to reduce violence as they expand the SCOUT program to operate on Saturdays (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) later this year and invest $100,000 in youth sports programs with a family event at Lock 3 on June 5. The city also continues the Akron Street Team pilot program, which has met with 30 at-risk residents and made 125 outreach calls to help prevent further incidents.  Cleveland.com
  • The Akron-Summit County Public Library is on the May 6 primary ballot with Issue 18 — a 1-mill capital levy that would raise taxes by $35 for each $100,000 of appraised value to generate $160 million over 20 years for needed repairs and modernization. Voters in some areas outside the library’s district will not cast ballots on this issue while residents in the designated district must decide if the measure meets community needs.  WKYC
  • Ohio’s Transportation Review Advisory Council approved $117.2 million for four highway projects in the Cleveland-Akron area, including a $66 million project in Akron to add lanes near the I-76/I-77 interchange. The council awarded funds along with projects in Solon and Mentor as part of a $319.3 million statewide plan last week.  Cleveland.com
  • At an April 21 meeting, Norton City Council discussed rezoning just over 51 acres on the south side of Reimer Road from R-U1 to R-3 and R-PC so Contract Consultants can build 100 new homes on 0.25-acre lots starting in the low $400,000s. The council also approved plans for a 20‐home project near Norton High School and several service contracts, with its next meeting scheduled on May 5 at 7 p.m.—officials noted concerns about traffic, stormwater, and utilities.  Akron.com
