COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Akron Roundtable speaker series marks its 50th anniversary by showcasing memorable quotes from speakers since its start in May 1976. It will feature Daryl Tol presenting *The Future of Healthcare* on May 21 at Quaker Station, 135 S. Broadway.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Akron’s first Blessing Box, part of the Stark Blessing Box Initiative (led by Maiharriese McDonald), is set up at 10 W. Tallmadge Ave in the Zion Apostolic Church parking lot to provide free essentials like shampoo, detergent, and food to those in need.  Signal Akron
  • Community groups host events in Akron this week, including a Hunger Walk (May 3) at the Unitarian Universalist Church for the foodbank, a Celebration of the Arts at Revere High (May 4 to May 7), a Senior Summit (May 6), and a NAMI luncheon (May 7).  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Heintz-Hillcrest Park at 1780 Highview Ave in Firestone Park (a repeat finalist) is in the running for a $150,000 upgrade grant from the Akron Parks Collaborative. City officials said the park will compete for a 2026 award with a decision expected mid-June.  Signal Akron

CRIME NEWS

  • The Akron Zoo was evacuated on Sunday after receiving a bomb threat at 10:50 a.m.; police and fire crews checked the scene and the facility remains closed with no reopening time set.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • A lively arts week is planned across Akron and nearby areas, with concerts, plays and comedy shows scheduled through May 10. Highlights include a comedy night at BLU Jazz+ at 47 E. Market St. on May 7 and Fiddler on the Roof at the Akron Civic Theatre from May 8.  Akron Beacon Journal
