BUSINESS NEWS

  • Aldi announced that most stores will be open on Mother's Day with regular hours of 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and will offer limited-time Aldi Finds deals starting May 7 with items priced under $10. The chain is expanding with over 225 new stores nationwide and will open a new Akron location at 1890 West Market Street—suite 200 on May 22.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Breeze Airways said it will add six new routes from Akron-Canton Airport, with five nonstop flights to cities in Florida and North Carolina and one route with a stop. The move brings the airport’s total destinations to 24 and follows a plan to open a crew base this summer — creating more than 60 new jobs in the area.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Eight Ohio craft breweries won medals at the recent World Beer Cup after judges from 37 countries tested over 8,000 beer entries in 14 sessions over seven days. The awards honored top beers including Akron’s Eighty-Three Brewery (for its A.5) and winners from Cincinnati, Kettering, Middleburg Heights, Blue Ash and Fresno.  Akron Beacon Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Two men were arrested on May 6 after a postal carrier in West Akron was robbed by a gunman wearing a ski mask at 6:30 p.m. — police said a lengthy foot chase followed when the suspects' dark gray Dodge Charger was found parked behind an apartment and both men were taken to the Summit County Jail.  Akron Beacon Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Akron residents will celebrate abolitionist John Brown's 225th birthday with a hike and history lesson at the John Brown Monument tomorrow from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.—participants are invited to enjoy cake, ice cream and view a Black History exhibit at the John Brown House after the event.  Signal Akron

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday night, voters approved Issue 18, which will raise $160 million over 20 years+ funds needed to repair and update the Akron-Summit County Public Library. Homeowners in the district will pay $35 per $100,000 of appraised value annually starting in 2026+ the levy will help modernize nearly 24-year-old library facilities.  WKYC
