- ➤ Two Akron police officers were recorded punching 31-year-old Dontay Auston in the head at the Park Lane Manor apartment complex in East Akron Wednesday night after staff called 911 for his disruptive behavior, and he was tased, handcuffed and charged with obstructing official business and resisting arrest—police said a review is underway. - ➤ A viral video shows an Akron officer repeatedly punching a handcuffed man after arresting him at an apartment complex following a call about an assault, and the suspect—who was covered in blood and said to be disruptive—is now held on charges of resisting arrest and obstructing official business while his use of force is under review. - ➤ On May 2nd, Girl Scouts of North East Ohio opened the 8,000-square-foot Vivian von Gruenigen, MD STEM Center of Excellence at Camp Ledgewood in Peninsula. Community members and officials—including Rep. Emilia Sykes and Girl Scout leader Bonnie Barczykowski—attended the event as Sykes had given an $850,000 check to help fund the project. Akron.com

- ➤ Summit County voters approved multiple state and local ballot issues on May 6 despite a 14% turnout. Voters backed renewals and levies—such as a state infrastructure program and funding for fire departments, libraries and schools—with vote support ranging from 56% to over 70% as reported on May 7. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Summit County Public Health reported that hospital visits for drug overdoses peaked on April 29 with nine cases and a total of 87 overdoses in April—32 in the last week. Officials have alerted Summit Safe Syringe Exchange program clients about naloxone access and will send follow-up messages if overdose visits continue to rise. Akron Beacon Journal
