COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Downtown Akron Partnership launches its Summer Downtown series at Cascade Plaza and Lock 3 starting May 19, offering free wellness classes, roller skating nights, cornhole leagues, lunchtime concerts and creative workshops. Residents can register online for events running through Sept. 6.  Cleveland.com

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Giant Eagle announced a recall of roasted turkey products sold since April 28 after inspectors found potential metal fragments, and customers in Ohio stores can return the products for a full refund with a receipt. No illnesses have been reported.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Akron food truck owners Charly Murphy and co-owner Alicia Kennedy say rising gas prices are forcing them to adjust their business strategies. They are trying new methods to cut costs while keeping customers served across the city.  Akron Beacon Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three branch libraries in Akron-Summit County are closing for renovations; the Tallmadge branch closed in March, the Ellet branch closed today, and the Nordonia Hills branch will close Aug. 1. Springfield-Lakemore will relocate to a former Rite Aid building, and town hall meetings will be held to share renovation plans.  Akron Beacon Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Akron Children's is set to expand its care by buying the former Notre Dame College campus in South Euclid after bidding $8M at an auction on May 7. The pending purchase will support plans for new pediatric specialty services in Greater Cleveland.  Akron Beacon Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Chloe White of Manchester softball and Anthony Cardarelli of Green baseball won the Akron-Area Athlete of the Week award for April 27-May 3 from 23,878 votes cast. White received 71.10% while Cardarelli earned 58.82% — a vote celebrating high school sports.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • The Cavaliers are still trying to fix their offense after James Harden's 10-point Game 2 left them 0-2 against the Pistons. Today at Rocket Arena, the team looks to refine its play (and help Harden find his rhythm) as they face a must-win scenario.  Akron Beacon Journal
