  • Agnes Hazlett, known as ‘Mom’ at Summit County Children’s Home on South Arlington Street, cared for about 2,000 toddlers over nearly 35 years after almost quitting on her first day in 1927, leaving a lasting impact on the Akron community.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Two longtime Summit County firefighters are set to be honored today at the Ohio Fire Service Hall of Fame & Awards in Columbus for their distinguished service. BUSINESS NEWS

  • Akron's Spaghetti Warehouse will close May 17 after *33 years* due to declining traffic and fewer events. The restaurant will offer a reduced menu in its final week and may return if the right space is found, as GPD Group plans to take over the building in 2027.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Ravenna-born jeweler Megan Piccione's custom pieces made a splash on Monday, May 4 at the Met Gala in New York when model Lauren Wasser wore her designs after last-minute approval from Anna Wintour's team; her work with her father shows that family tradition can open doors to big opportunities & attract global attention.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • GasBuddy data released Monday shows Akron's gas price dropped 22.7 cents to $4.68 per gallon today while Cleveland’s fell 11.3 cents to $4.77, though both remain above the national average ($4.48).  WKYC

  • 16-year-old Isabella Dolinar, a sophomore at Ellet CLC, recently published her romance novel, Love Me, Then Leave Me, on Amazon (crafted on Google Docs) while balancing schoolwork and her job at Donatos and inspiring her peers with her creative spirit.  Signal Akron

  • On Monday, May 11, the Akron Board of Education approved an $11M budget cut for the upcoming school year that includes $1.6M in staff reductions. A resolution — aimed at clarifying staffing and class size impacts — was sent for further discussion.  Signal Akron

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The 95-foot oak at Cascade Valley Metro Park remains safe despite ongoing dredging at Gorge Dam, as Davey Tree Expert Co. supports it with cables and braces and Summit Metro Parks maintains a safety fence. The dredging work is scheduled to last a few more years.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • The Davey Tree SEED Campus in Kent will host the North American Tree Climbing Championship from May 15-17, with competitors taking part in contests such as aerial rescue, work climb, and ascents.
