CRIME NEWS

  • A 52-year-old Akron man, Narlon Portis, died from a stab wound to his torso on May 10 after being attacked on Cromwell Drive near Sand Run Metro Park around 8 p.m.—he was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General and pronounced dead at 9:13 p.m., and the suspect, reportedly known to him, fled the scene as police continue to investigate.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Summit County prosecutors said Monday that Jeffery Peasley—convicted for fatally shooting Robert Zornes, Jr. and stealing his motorcycle during a 2021 argument in Coventry Township—will spend his life in prison.  Cleveland 19 News

  • Since the start of the year, Akron demolished 87 vacant properties to fight blight, and on Monday, crews demolished the 88th property — the final one funded by a state grant — to improve neighborhood conditions.  News 5 Cleveland

HEALTH NEWS

  • Ten-year-old Ava Cooper returned home today after nearly 300 days at Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital where she received a lifesaving heart transplant — her family now faces a daily routine of over a dozen medications and frequent hospital visits. They plan to connect with the donor family and look forward to Ava resuming school this fall — a milestone in her recovery.  WKYC
