- ➤ The family of 9-year-old Xandria Mancuso, who died in an accident on May 7, has planned a funeral for May 23 in Akron at Newcomer Funeral Home — visitation is from 4 to 6 p.m. at 131 N. Canton Road — while authorities continue to investigate her death. Akron Beacon Journal

- ➤ A 20-year-old man pleaded guilty to shooting 37-year-old Gregory Dykes outside an Akron apartment in April 2024 — he received an 11-year prison sentence and is now registered as a violent offender. News 5 Cleveland
- ➤ Akron man Anthony McCants pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, involuntary manslaughter and endangering children after he is accused of forcing a 12-year-old to take two long ice baths that led to the child's death—his trial will begin on June 16 at Summit County Common Pleas Court. WKYC
- ➤ On Mother's Day, a pickup truck driver on Route 8 in Akron threw kittens from his moving vehicle at about 3 p.m. on May 11—killing two and injuring a third kitten that Jennie and Damien Highfield rescued by paying for its emergency treatment at MedVet in Copley before it found a new home—while police continue to investigate the incident. - ➤ Akron police identified 56-year-old Rosue Pierce as the suspect in the fatal stabbing of 52-year-old Narlon Portis near Sand Run Park on May 10 in the 1600 block of Cromwell Drive (he is a 5'11 male about 200 pounds with a bald head, brown eyes, and gray facial hair) and he is wanted on charges of murder and felonious assault. - ➤ The city of Akron has opened grant applications for local nonprofits to support youth sports and wellness programs with awards ranging from $500 to $5,000—applications must be submitted by midnight May 31 and funds may be used for program fees, mental health services, coach training and safety equipment, but not staffing.
