A shooting in a McDonald’s parking lot at the 1800 block of Merriman Road in Akron killed 23-year-old Diamond Fisk early Sunday when officers responded to reports that a crowd outside the Empire Lounge would not leave (Fisk was pronounced dead at 2:16 a.m. at Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center).

Local 501(c)(3) nonprofits serving Akron’s youth can apply for grants from $500 to $5,000 to fund sports and wellness programs as part of a city initiative that commits $100,000 to cover fees, coach training, and equipment safety measures.

Applications must be submitted by Saturday, May 31, at 11:59 p.m.—via email or by drop-off at City Hall.

On Sunday, May 18th, the 2025 Cleveland Marathon ended with winners—Zach Kreft ran 2:18:58 and Ashton Swinford finished in 2:51:32 to win the full marathon, Sam Snodgrass ran 1:07:29 and Emma Johnson finished in 1:20:11 to win the half marathon, Chris Turner ran 33:28 and Mandie Samuels recorded 42:45 in the 10K, while Matthew Badgett and Akron’s Hannah Long finished the 5K in 17:56 and 17:22. The multi-day event, which began on May 16th, also featured designated cheer spots and after parties for participants and fans.
