- ➤ Local officials, residents, and donors celebrated Summit Lake NorthShore Park’s grand opening on May 16 at 540 W. South St. The park offers a covered pavilion, fishing pier, boat house with concessions and picnic shelters (with a nearby canal trail spanning 101 miles) for community recreation. Akron.com
- ➤ Several area communities will honor Memorial Day on May 25 with ceremonies held at various locations including Bath Township and Fairlawn. Events feature parades, pancake breakfasts and speeches to remember service members from 7 a.m. to noon. Akron.com
- ➤ Heintz Hillcrest Park in the Firestone Park neighborhood was named the winner of the 2026 Akron Parks Challenge and will receive $150,000 to upgrade park features. - ➤ Akron Mayor Shammas Malik announced the first Blimp Day to be held on June 6 to celebrate the iconic Goodyear airships. Two blimps will fly over all 24 neighborhoods + a photo contest will invite residents to capture the best image of the flights. Akron Beacon Journal

- ➤ At its May 19 meeting in New Franklin, the Manchester board approved a forecast update after Superintendent Hinton and Treasurer Rucker reported that $1.6M in savings will come amid a $500K annual loss from new state funding rules (HB 335). The board also accepted a donation for local soccer teams. Akron.com
- ➤ A wide-spread power outage occurred Thursday morning at University of Akron (power restoration remains undetermined), and officials advised students to check their e-mail for a list of affected buildings. Cleveland 19 News
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Summit Metro Parks issued a wildlife notice due to a coyote den located just outside park boundaries near Firestone Metro Park. Officials advise pedestrians to avoid Harrington Road and give coyotes plenty of space until the pups mature. WKYC
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On May 11, Cuyahoga Falls Council approved a 26,000 sqft expansion for CVCA at 4687 Wyoga Lake Road, adding 14 classrooms + offices for $8.8 million. It also approved an ADA restroom at Valley Vista Park and updated stormwater rules, paving the way for repairs and an entertainment district expansion. Akron.com
- ➤ Delegates and officials met Thursday at The Well CDC to plan housing reforms. City leaders will review proposals every six months, including tiny home communities, a housing revenue fund, and down payment aid + stricter code enforcement while proposals to boost inspector hiring were not approved. - ➤ Fairlawn City Council accepted $627,600 (May 18) in grant funding for Phase I of the Schocalog to Sand Run Greenway to build a 10-foot sidepath linking the Rosemont Preserve Trailhead and Morewood Road south of Summit Mall. The project is set for bidding next year. Akron.com
