COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bath Volunteers for Service will host the 47th Tour of Distinctive Homes as a virtual showcase from June 1 to 12, letting ticket holders view six elegant Akron homes on demand. Proceeds will fund community scholarships and nonprofit grants, and a group watch party will be held on June 7 at Bath United Church of Christ (3980 W. Bath Road).  Akron Beacon Journal

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Early Saturday morning, a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta left Massillon Road in Springfield Township, killing 18-year-old Isabelle Grubaugh of Akron while the driver was treated for non-life-threatening injuries—OSHP said drugs, alcohol, and not wearing seatbelts likely contributed to the crash.  Cleveland 19 News
  • An 18-year-old Akron woman died in a one-vehicle crash on Massillon Road in Springfield Township on May 24 when a Volkswagen Jetta driven by a 22-year-old man went off the road at 1:26 a.m.—the driver was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.  Akron Beacon Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • The University of Akron campus was locked down briefly on May 24 after UA police determined that a shooting call during a Streamer University Twitch event was unfounded—Akron police said a separate call for an unrelated shooting near the I Promise School at about 4:27 p.m. is under investigation.  Akron Beacon Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Akron Children's Hospital is sponsoring the Takashi Murakami exhibit opening today at the Cleveland Museum of Art as part of its expansion into Greater Cleveland. The exhibit (today to Sept. 7) features interactive art that requires a separate ticket besides free museum admission (tickets are required for the Murakami display).  Akron Beacon Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Akron-Canton spellers Zach Yeager, a 14-year-old from Doylestown representing the Akron Beacon Journal, and Blaze Blacketer of Oakwood Middle School representing The Canton Repository will compete at the Scripps National Spelling Bee from May 27 to 29 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Oxon Hill — the event marks its 100th anniversary and its final year at this venue as 243 regional winners in grades two through eight vie for over $50,000 in prizes.  Akron Beacon Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Rep. Jack Daniels is asking 32nd District residents to email comments until June 2 on a proposed change that may let drivers use an alternative emissions certificate to ease the testing system & lower costs. The Ohio EPA will review the input and then send the plan to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for approval.  Akron Beacon Journal
