COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Three Goodyear blimps—Wingfoot One, Wingfoot Two, and Wingfoot Three—will fly over downtown Akron on June 3 for the mayor’s State of the City address at Lock 3 and the RubberDucks game at Canal Park as part of the company’s 100th anniversary celebration.   • Thirteen-year-old Matthew Schultz died after falling off a dual-axle trailer during Monday's Memorial Day parade in Green at 11:23 a.m.—he was run over by a Ford F-150 as first responders quickly arrived and provided aid.  WKYC

  • Newlyweds in Northeast Ohio say photographer Lauren Carmichael of Simply Picturesque has not delivered promised wedding photos despite assurances; Sam and Luke Deegan reported being told their photos would arrive in January and again by the end of March — complaints have also been filed with the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and a low BBB rating persists. CRIME NEWS

  • Corvette Pope pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and obstructing justice for the July 28 shooting death of Paige Calich, who was found inside a home on Socrates Place in Akron — her brother Denzel Pope was arrested on Aug. 1 and faces charges related to the case.  Cleveland 19 News
  • Police responded to a shooting at Akron I Promise School after a 17-year-old was allegedly shot on Saturday just before 3:30 p.m.—witnesses transported the victim to a hospital while officers recovered nearly two dozen shell casings, and the investigation remains ongoing.  FOX 8
  • A Virginia woman pleaded guilty to killing a Northeast Ohio man in Cuyahoga Valley National Park & now awaits sentencing.  Cleveland 19 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mary Outley, an Akron native and longtime educator, was named superintendent of Akron Public Schools on April 28 — a role that comes with a three-year contract at $240,000 a year. She now leads the district as it faces major construction projects, budget challenges, and a decrease in student enrollment.  Signal Akron

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Akron leaders announced that the Gorge Dam removal project will let the Cuyahoga River flow freely over the next five years. The work will start with sediment dredging this fall and dam demolition planned for 2028 and 2029—federal and local partners have provided over $100 million to fund the restoration.  Signal Akron

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Michael Redovian—a pediatric psychologist at Akron Children's Hospital—said social media sites like TikTok can help children with ADHD or ADD find support but may also lead to inaccurate self-diagnoses if screen time is not controlled.
