Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 5th of June.
Good morning, Akron.
Akron will celebrate Firestone Stadium’s 100th anniversary on June 14 with a free daylong event—hosted by the city and the Akron Amateur Softball Commission—that includes a parade, live entertainment, food trucks and softball games.
The parade will start at 11 a.m. at Firestone Park Community Center and travel along Firestone Boulevard to the stadium while scheduled games for different age groups are held later in the day.
Beginning Monday, June 9, free breakfasts and lunches will be provided at 17 Akron sites for eligible children 18 and younger by the City of Akron and Akron Public Schools.
The program runs Monday through Friday until Aug. 1—excluding holidays—and automatically qualifies households receiving food stamps or TANF.
Tyler Bartley, an 18-year-old Akron drive-thru clerk, was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison after pleading guilty in March to killing 47-year-old Patrick Boergert at Border’s Drive Thru in East Akron—surveillance video and witness accounts confirmed the fatal shooting.
A former Akron police captain, Douglas Prade, who maintains his innocence, is now eligible for parole almost 30 years after his 1998 murder conviction — his parole board meeting on Wednesday was postponed due to insufficient members — and a decision is expected in several weeks.
Mayor Malik said that Akron can overcome division if residents work together, as he outlined new plans for public safety, housing, and economic development at the June 3 State of City address at Lock 3 — including a hospital-linked violence intervention program set to launch this fall and steps to remove lead waterlines.
