- ➤ Akron and the Akron Amateur Softball Commission will host a free event on June 14 to celebrate Firestone Stadium's 100th anniversary—there will be a parade starting at 11 a.m. at Firestone Park Community Center that ends at the stadium, along with food trucks, live entertainment, a touch-a-truck for children and a series of softball games. - ➤ A 38-year-old man was hospitalized with gunshot wounds Thursday morning in South Akron after witnesses reported more than a dozen shots fired on the 1100 block of Grant Street—police are still searching for the suspect. Akron Beacon Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Green Middle School closed after serving seventh and eighth grade students since it was built in 1969 and is set for demolition to begin on June 23. Principal Evan Elliott said that staff and students will move to a new building in the fall—where sixth grade will join the current classes. Akron.com
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Akron will remove all lead water lines from residences and businesses by the end of this year after Service Director Chris Ludle presented legislation for a $20 million, 40-year loan with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and Water Development Authority at a June 2 meeting—four contractors will replace about 5,000 galvanized lines with copper by the end of 2026 and council will vote on the proposal at the June 9 meeting at 6:30 p.m. Akron.com
- ➤ Today, Summit County announced it received $6M in federal funding to help residents remove lead from homes built before 1978; the program offers a five-year deferred, forgivable mortgage for eligible homeowners with children under 6—landlords on rental units must cover 20% of repair bids. - ➤ Akron will begin providing free breakfasts & lunches to eligible youths through a summertime meal program starting June 9 at selected community centers and other sites, with service available Monday through Friday until Aug. 1 except on June 19 & July 4. The meals will be prepared by Akron Public Schools and are offered to children who meet income guidelines for the National School Lunch Program, food stamps, TANF & FDPIR. Akron Beacon Journal
- ➤ Today, the city of Akron and Akron Parks Collaborative are hosting a ribbon cutting ceremony at Elizabeth Park at 4 p.m. for a new splash pad that covers over 2,600 square feet with 15 water features designed with neighborhood input (featuring accessibility elements) (speakers include Akron Mayor Shammas Malik, Bridget Ambrisco and Valerie Moss).
